36 confirmed dead in Hong Kong passenger boat collisionby

Two passenger boats collided near Lamma island off Hong Kong on Monday night, killing at least 36 people

HONG KONG -- A passenger boat carrying 120 people collided with a commuter ferry near Lamma island off the southwestern coast of Hong Kong Island on Monday evening at around 8.30pm local time on Monday.

The boat was packed with employees of Hong Kong's electric company and their families travelling to famed Victoria Harbour to view a fireworks display in celebration of China's National Day and mid-autumn festival.

At least 36 people were killed in the collision, authorities confirmed on Tuesday morning.

At least 100 people were pulled from the waters and taken to hospital, and a large-scale air and sea rescue effort was continuing through the night.

A local government statement confirmed that "over 100 people were sent to five hospitals during the incident, nine of whom have sustained serious injuries or are in critical condition," adding that "the Fire Services Department can't rule out that there are still others inside a vessel".

Search and rescue efforts would continue on Tuesday, it confirmed.
