A look at consumer prices in March, by the numbers

Consumer inflation rose more than expected in March, boosted by gas, rents, auto insurance and other items, the government said Wednesday. That makes it less likely the Federal Reserve will soon cut interest rates. There was some good news for consumers: The big spikes in food and other grocery items seen in 2022 and early 2023 continue to moderate, although items such as eggs and ground beef remain costlier than they were two years ago.
