Chancellor Philip Hammond hits back at critics calling for him to be sacked

City A.M. Friday, 13 October 2017 ()
Chancellor Philip Hammond hits back at critics calling for him to be sackedPhilip Hammond has bit back at claims he is running down the UK's economy, describing such accusations as "bizarre".

The chancellor has faced criticism for stating that Brexit has created uncertainty around the economy - during a recent appearance before the Treasury Select Committee (TSC) this week, Hammond would not commit to spending based on a no deal scenario in next month's Budget. He also said no Brexit deal could result in flights between the EU and the UK being grounded.

In the wake of the TSC hearing, former chancellor Nigel Lawson called on Theresa May to sack Hammond, while Leave.EU launched its own campaign to get Hammond out of the Treasury.

"It is absurd to pretend that the process we are engaged in hasn't created some uncertainty. But the underlying economy remains robust," Hammond said today, according to a BBC report.

"I am committed to delivering a Brexit deal that works for Britain."

The Prime Minister said today that she has "full confidence" in her chancellor, and one former minister told City A.M.: "Hammond is safe until the Budget, although of course things are changing fast. It's a tall order, but if things go well in the overall handling of the Budget that might help calm things down."
