Tourist falls asleep on airport baggage conveyor belt and passes through powerful X-ray machineby

A drunk Norwegian tourist took the advice to keep bags attended at all times too literally when he fell asleep on a baggage conveyor belt and passed through a powerful X-ray scanner

ROME, Italy -- A 36-year-old Norwegian tourist fell asleep on a baggage conveyor belt at Rome's Fiumicino airport and travelled on it all the way through a powerful X-ray scanner.

It appears the reportedly drunk tourist had climbed over one of the check-in desks and fallen asleep on the belt that carries passenger's luggage to be loaded onto their flights.

The man then travelled for 15 minutes through the secure baggage area before being spotted on an X-ray scanner by airport officials. They noticed the X-ray imager depicting the man in the foetal position, stopped the belt and alerted the police.

Police said his unscheduled journey had not exposed any security risk. "There is a security system – a sort of roll-up blind – which can only be opened by the member of staff who loads the baggage," a police officer said.

Once awoken, the man was taken to the hospital over concerns surrounding his X-ray exposure. He was also reported to prosecutors for causing alarm at the airport.
