China's leading search engine Baidu looks for growth in mobile, cloud computingby

The Chinese equivalent of Google, the country's dominant search engine Baidu, is looking to fend off smaller competitors by investing in cloud computing and rolling out a mobile browser

BEIJING, China -- China's largest search engine Baidu is planning to invest more than 10 billion yuan ($1.6 bn) to set up a new cloud computing centre to offer data storage and processing done on the web.

The plans were unveiled by Baidu's chief financial officer Jennifer Li at the company's annual Baidu World Forum event on Monday.

Baidu's goal is for 80% of China's Android handsets to have the Baidu Mobile Browser installed by the end this year, according to Li.

Baidu already operates the largest cloud in China and currently commands a market share in search of 80%, but has ambitions to grow internationally and derive more than half its revenues from abroad.

The Internet giant also unveiled its mobile Internet browser to capitalize on the booming mobile sector. The Android-based "Baidu Mobile Browser" features a new HTML5 and Javascript engine that the company says is fast enough to compete on the international stage against rival offerings from Google and Opera.
