Ensembles Depend on Yamaha at the 2016 Grand National Championships and Capture Gold and Silver Awards

Nearly 70,000 music students representing 481 bands, all of which are using a variety of Yamaha instruments, participated in regional BOA events leading up to the Grand Nationals.

Since 1997, Yamaha Corporation of America has played a leadership role in the Bands of America (BOA) Championships, a program of Music for All. Yamaha was National Presenting Sponsor for this year’s National Championships competitions held at Lucas Oil Stadium on November 9-12.

Yamaha Artist Jeff Queen led the Carmel High School of Carmel, Indiana, percussion section to a Gold medal this year and Yamaha Winds Artist Matt Harloff led Avon High School of Avon, Indiana to a second place finish. Ronald Reagan High School of San Antonio, Texas captured a seventh place win under the leadership of Yamaha Artist Ray Ulibarri.

Nearly 70,000 music students representing 481 bands, all of which are using a variety of Yamaha instruments, participated in regional BOA events leading up to the Grand Nationals where 100 outstanding high school marching bands from 20 states competed. A panel of nationally recognized music educators and marching arts experts evaluated each competing band in preliminary, semi-final and final competitions. The top 12 scoring bands competed in the Finals competitions where the Grand National Champion was named.

Since 1997, high school ensembles performing on Yamaha percussion instruments have achieved an enviable record of accomplishments by garnering more than 60 percent of all of the Gold, Silver and Bronze medals awarded at BOA Championships. Beyond awards, however, students who are performing and studying with Yamaha instruments are set up for success due to the quality, consistency, durability and industry support gained by using the company’s peerless instruments.

The exciting BOA competitions are renowned for their spectacular music and creative pageantry. Founded in 1975, the BOA is the leading presenter of music events for high school students. Its Grand Nationals is the largest high school marching band championship in the United States with more than one million alumni of marching band events. Culminating a season of 21 regional competitions, the 2016 Grand National Championships attracted more than 83,000 participants and spectators, with thousands more watching the events via live stream.
