Olympic organizers apologize for North Korea flag mix-upby

London 2012 organizers apologized to the North Korean women's football team after the flag of rival nation South Korea was mistakenly shown on stadium screens

GLASGOW, United Kingdom -- Organizers of the London 2012 Olympics had to apologize to the North Korean women's football team for a blunder which saw the South Korean flag displayed on stadium screens during the players' warm-up on Wednesday.

The game with Colombia at Hampden Park, Glasgow, kicked off an hour late after the North Korean women's football team left the pitch after the flag of South Korean was displayed.

London 2012 spokesman Andy Mitchell said: "The South Korean flag was shown in the video package on the screen before the kick-off and the North Koreans were naturally very upset about that...

"A genuine mistake was made for which we apologise."

Relations between North and South Korea remain tense as have been technically at war since 1950.

Following the flag mix-up blunder, the North Korean team only returned onto the pitch when the two teams were announced again - with each player being displayed next to the correct North Korean flag.

London 2012 Olympic Games organisers LOCOG issued a statement, which read: "Ahead of the women's football match at Hampden Park, the South Korean flag was shown on a big screen video package instead of the North Korean flag. Clearly this is a mistake. We will apologise to the team and the National Olympic Committee and steps will be taken to ensure this does not happen again."
