Opening Ceremony London 2012: One billion viewers expectedby

Following seven years of preparation, the London Olympics opening ceremony is set to take place on Friday evening and attract a global TV audience of one billion people

LONDON, United Kingdom -- The highly anticipated opening ceremony of the London 2012 Olympics will mark the beginning of 17 days of athletic competition.

A crowd of around 80,000 attendees including the Queen and a host of dignitaries and celebrities is set to be present inside the Olympic stadium to view the £27m ($42m) extravaganza. In addition, the three-hour spectacle is set to be watch by a billion TV viewers around the globe.

Oscar-winning Danny Boyle is the artistic director of the opening ceremony.

"Our Isles of Wonder salutes and celebrates the exuberant creativity of the British genius in an Opening Ceremony that we hope will be as unpredictable and inventive as the British people," Boyle said.

Prime Minister David Cameron said Britain was ready to welcome "the greatest show on earth".

"It's a great opportunity to show the world the best of Britain, a country that's got an incredibly rich past but also a very exciting future," Cameron said speaking in Downing Street.

"Someone asked me yesterday what face of Britain do we want to put forward - is it Blur or the Beefeaters? - and frankly it's both."

The opening ceremony is scheduled to commence at 9pm BST (10pm CEST, 4pm EST)
