At least 14 people have been killed and 50 injured at a mass shooting at a Batman movie premiere in Colorado

DENVER, CO -- A gunman opened fire during a premiere screening of the latest Batman movie "The Dark Knight Rises" at a suburban Denver, CO movie theatre in the early hours of Friday morning - killing at least 14 people and leaving around 50 injured.

Colorado police confirmed the shooting took place at a movie theatre complex in Aurora, Colorado, around 12.30am on Friday morning.

According to witness reports, the attacker was dressed all in black and was wearing a riot helmet, bulletproof vest and goggles. The gunman released a smoke bomb during the incident and opened fire during a shooting scene and people initially thought they were live special effects as part of the premiere screening.

Police confirmed a man carrying a rifle and a hang-gun has been arrested in a nearby car park. More weapons were discovered at the movie theatre.

Denver Police Chief Dan Oates confirmed city police were checking the area for explosives.
