U.S. Presidential Election: Mitt Romney's derisory view of Obama voters casts a cloud over his campaign [VIDEO]by

Republican U.S. presidential candidate Mitt Romney's campaign suffered a set-back on Monday after his disparaging comments about Obama voters were secretly filmed and aired by the media. View the secret video recording here.

BOCA RATON, FL -- Mitt Romney's secretly filmed remarks at a fundraising event in Boca Raton, Florida were beginning to cast a cloud over his presidential campaign on Tuesday as they were met with increasing scepticism amongst Americans who watched the video recording on TV stations and online web sites.

The former Massachusetts governor disparaged those who would vote for his rival, President Barack Obama, saying that 47% of them "do not pay income tax" and "believe they are victims".

"I'll never convince them they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives," Romney was recorded as saying.

Mitt Romney was secretly filmed during his fundraiser, generally characterizing Obama supporters as people who "pay no income tax" and are "dependent on government".
The video footage was originally published by the website of liberal investigative magazine Mother Jones.

Romney stood by his comments during a hastily arranged news conference on Monday night, saying his message was "not elegantly stated". He fell short of retracting his comments.

The Obama campaign jumped on Romney's comments. "It's hard to serve as president for all Americans when you've disdainfully written off half the nation," campaign manager Jim Messina said in a statement.

David Brooks noted in his op-ed column in the New York Times on Tuesday:
Romney's comment is a country-club fantasy. It's what self-satisfied millionaires say to each other. It reinforces every negative view people have about Romney.

The BBC published an insight on Romney's views on the Middle East, derived from different video footage recorded at the same fundraiser event.

Reportedly, Romney is shown saying that Palestinians are "committed to the destruction and elimination of Israel," and "have no interest whatsoever in establishing peace".

It remains to be seen how Romney's comments influence the U.S. election poll, which showed Obama slightly ahead of him a week ago, with 49% of Americans indicating their support for the current president vs 46% supporting Mitt Romney.
