Strengthening Hurricane Sandy could make landfall in Connecticut and New England next week - forecastersby

Hurricane Sandy could potentially turn into a "perfect storm" for the U.S. East coast next week, say forecasters

Hurricane Sandy slammed into Cuba on Wednesday night as a category 2 storm with wind speeds topping 114 mph. The hurricane has been blamed for at least two deaths in the region.

Now forecasters predict that Sandy has the potential to make landfall in Connecticut and New England early next week. The five-day forecast from the National Hurricane Center predicts the center of the storm will shadow the East Coast, but could "potentially transition over the weekend into a powerful nor'easter." Such a landfall could down trees, cause flooding and power outages.

A weather pattern called the "North Atlantic Oscillation", which is currently blocking weather systems moving off the United States may turn Sandy towards the East Coast, experts warned on Thursday.

At this stage the National Hurricane Center confirmed that "the uncertainty in the long-rage track forecast remains very high."

The center said it would monitor the storm and provide regular updates.
