Will This Invention Destroy The Water Bottle?

Will This Invention Destroy The Water Bottle?by

With our oceans quickly filling up with waste plastic, this invention may go a long way towards eliminating the need for water bottles.

It’s thought that the US alone is responsible for not only throwing away billions of plastic bottles as a result of our mineral water thirst, but is also responsible for wasting barrels full of oil in the process. For many, however, buying a bottle of water is simply convenient for billions of people worldwide. Water bottles from various firms are generally cheap to buy and easy to find – but, at the same time, they are contributing negatively to plastic waste and upon our environment. Therefore, there have been a number of initiatives started up to try and tackle this thirst in unique and cost-effective ways – and one revealed this week appears to completely revolutionize the way through which we hydrate ourselves.

The Ooho edible water bottle was launched this week via crowdsourcing through CrowdCube, and it’s a device that provides drinkers with an instant hit of refreshment in just one bite. The bubble-shaped creation has been around as a concept for three years, but it’s only this week that potential investors have finally been given the chance to put their money where their mouths are and stake cash to gain equity in a product that is, presently, pre-valued at around $3.6 million. Looking for investment of just under $500,000, the firm behind the project – Skipping Rocks Labs – has already made twice that target ahead of schedule. It’s certainly one of the more interesting crowdfunding projects to have come to light in recent years, and as a result it’s found a major interest from those who actively want to reduce problems caused by mass water bottle consumption. But how does the Ooho work?

The ball is firstly made from ice and is subjected to both seaweed extract and calcium chloride, according to GearJunkie. From there, as the ice steadily melts, a ball-shaped membrane remains – allowing for water to stay contained inside a custom-made bubble. The Ooho can then be swallowed whole, safely, to satiate thirsty people in need of a bottle of water!

Skipping Rocks Lab - Ooho! - Crowdcube pitch

We think the Ooho is a great idea and, with the project already having succeeded in meeting its crowdfunding goal, we look forward to seeing it hit shelves in the years to come. If you’re interested in the project or would like to contribute in order to gain equity, find out more from Skipping Rocks Lab here – and help to make their product a reality!
