This Week In History: September 11th To September 17thby

History is fascinating – and the best way to study it, in our opinion, is to look back at what was going on this week so many years ago. In previous One News Page time travels, we’ve gone back years, decades and even millennia – there has always been a big story or momentous occurring on one of the 365 days of the year – and it’s our job to let you in on what took place in times gone by. Strap in and let’s get time travelling…

September 11th, 2001 – 9/11 World Trade Center Attacks
It was a terrorist attack that would redefine the term – and the horrific events that unfolded this day sixteen years ago can still be felt today. The iconic World Trade Center buildings were brought down by terrorist-hijacked aircraft which would take 2,996 lives and leave thousands more injured. Those lives tragically taken in the attacks will continue to be commemorated across the decades to come.

September 12th, 1981 – The Smurfs Cartoon Makes US Debut
The little blue creatures with an odd vocabulary made their animated debut on US television 36 years ago this week – and they’re still going strong across various media, having hit the pop charts in Europe and having seen three movies hit the big screen in the past decade alone.

September 13th, 1969 – Scooby-Doo Debuts in the US
And The Smurfs aren’t the only cartoon to have debuted this week back in time – as Scooby-Doo, Where Are You first introduced us to Shaggy, Scooby, Velma, Fred and Daphne almost fifty years ago.

September 14th, 1956 – First-Ever Prefrontal Lobotomy Performed
In a landmark operation which would change the face of brain surgery, this life-saving procedure made its debut in Washington DC, US, this week – 61 years ago.

September 15th, 1928 – Alexander Fleming Discovers Penicillin
It’s arguably the most famous and one of the most effective antibiotics in medical history – and if bacteria expert Alexander Fleming hadn’t been looking into the properties of influenza some 89 years ago, we wouldn’t have made quite so many medical advances.

September 16th, 1906 – Magnetic South Pole Discovered
The magnetic South Pole, as we know it, was first found by explorer Roald Amundsen 111 years ago – and we’re still making big discoveries about our planet to this day.

September 17th, 1972 – M*A*S*H Debuts
The iconic TV series centered around war medics remains one of the most-watched shows in history – and, to this day, it’s one of very few big US TV properties yet to receive the remake or reboot treatment.

Join us again next Monday for more travels in time!
