This Week In History: September 18th - September 24thby

There’s perhaps nothing quite as fascinating as looking back on how far we’ve come as a human race – and thankfully, we’ve always bene keen to record and reminisce on our various high points. Sadly, there are plenty of low points, too – and more than enough moments that we’ve learned from as a society since. Regardless of which category our trips fall under, you can always count on the One News Page time machine to give you an educational journey like no other – so strap in and let’s see what happened this week in times gone by!

September 18th, 1964 – ‘The Addams Family’ Premieres
They’re creepy, they’re kooky, they’re pop culture favorites – currently doing the rounds on the stage, the oddball family to end them all first hit our screens on ABC 53 years ago this week.

September 19th, 1975 – ‘Fawlty Towers’ Premieres
…and eleven years and one day later, the sitcom often regarded as the funniest ever made – though criminally short with just twelve episodes to its name – opened its doors to the public 42 years ago this week. The obnoxious and uptight Basil Fawlty is still-regarded as one of TV’s most celebrated comic characters.

September 20th, 1990 – East and West Germany Officially Reunited
The end of an era and a symbol of the end of the Cold War – following the bringing down of the Berlin Wall in 1989, both East and West Germany re-unified through official ratification 27 years ago this week.

September 21st, 1937 – ‘The Hobbit’ by JRR Tolkien is Published
Decades away from its revival as a three-part movie series, the adventures of Bilbo Baggins in Middle Earth were first brought to public attention 80 years ago this week. Time to dig the book – and the DVDs – back out!

September 22nd, 1997 – Elton John’s ‘Candle in The Wind 1997’ Released in the US
It was a fitting tribute record to the shock passing of Diana, Princess of Wales – and Elton John’s reworking of his classic number, originally written about Marilyn Monroe, would break huge chart records in the UK and Canada.

September 23rd, 1974 – BBC Ceefax Debuts
It’s a service that defined a generation of TV watchers in the UK – and though it is sadly no longer with us, BBC’s ‘teletext’ service, Ceefax, was a precursor to the internet that celebrates its 43rd birthday this week.

September 24th, 1952 – First ‘Kentucky Fried Chicken’ Opens
Salt Lake City, Utah, is the home town of KFC – and 65 years ago this week, Colonel Sanders oversaw the first ever restaurant open to the public. It’s a franchise that continues strong to this day, even decades after Sanders’ passing.

Join us again next week for another trip or two down memory lane!
