India's Supreme Court has ruled that theaters must play the national anthem before every movie. Justices Dipak Misra and Amitava Roy wrote "All present in the (cinema) hall are obliged to stand up to show respect to the national anthem". Some theaters already play the national anthem before movies, and many Indians are used to listening to the song before most society and school events. However, except for in the western state of Maharashtra, it has never before been the law. The justices said "The citizens of the country must realize that they live in a nation and are duty bound to show respect to (the) national anthem". Many Indians have criticized a recent trend toward aggressive displays of patriotism.
