Transcript: Local fishing guide starts guides and tours in Cuba

diplomacy through fly fishing. a north state guide says because of recent poor salmon and steelhead runs and the long winters.. it's tough to make a living here. so he's been taking anglers and tourists to cuba for the last year and a half. mount shasta's jack trout has made four trips to cuba in the last 18- months.. and has established a couple of businesses there: he's employed a couple of local fishing guides.. and takes people on tours of the island in classic cars. he told me he loves the island.. and its people.

"i was very shocked when i got there, because i thought it would be just completely run down, and obviously there's part sof havana that are like that, but for the most part, getting out of havana, there's just beautiful countryside, beautiful beaches, and the people are fantastic." president trump tightened restrictions on cuba last month.. he says until more is done for human rights there. but jack says it won't affect his businesses.. and he sees the cuban people supporting the u-s. jack hopes for more converations between the countries.

"i hope that president would actually embrace raul castro and have meetings with him and maybe even do kind of what reagan did, with this take down the wall philosophy and be a real hero with everybody." there are no additional restrictions on popular cuban rum and cigars. jack shared a couple with me.. although i don't smoke. -nat- here's where they are made: hand- rolled from tobacco plantations. and this isn't shasta caverns.. it's tobacco leaves drying. he says he even caught a black tipped shark in the bay of pigs.. site of the failed u-s military invasion in 1961.

"it was just so beautiful out there and to look out into the and think that at one time there were warships out here and i just think that tourism is a way, from the inside, that we could eliminate communism in cuba without war." imagine there's no countries? there's an iconic statue of john lennon in havana. if you'd like to find out more.. we've got a link to jack trout fly fishing on our website.. krcr-tv dot
