You’d be forgiven for thinking that, while watching any of the Marvel movies in which Robert Downey Jr stars as Tony Stark, his Iron Man suits look particularly expensive. Impossibly so, in fact – he’s been able to personally oversee the development of several models of the weaponized outfit, which largely helps the entrepreneur become a high-powered vigilante without the need for special powers or super-human strength. While the suits in the movies themselves will likely have cost millions to produce, the original real-life prop is still worth a cool $325,000 – and, as of the time of writing, no one knows where it is.
The original Iron Man suit from the 2009 movie of the same name – the picture that effectively started the Marvel Cinematic Universe – appears to have been stolen from its usual home at the Movie Prop Storage facility in Pacoima in Los Angeles. It’s news that is particularly worrying given its supposed value – and, as such, the LAPD are involved in what appears to be a criminal investigation – it’s been stolen, according to official lines. “It was reported by the storage facility that the prop was missing – it is considered a burglary,” advised LAPD Sergeant Barry Montgomery, commenting on the news.
It’s thought that Stark’s suit – this year celebrating ten years since it was seen on-screen in Jon Favreau’s maiden Marvel voyage – may have gone missing between February and the end of April – just ahead of the launch of Marvel’s Avengers Infinity War, which continues to dominate at the box office, and, of course, features Downey Jr once again as the smooth-talking, sardonic Stark. This is an unfolding story – meaning that more news will likely come along as and when leads emerge – but quite what anyone will expect to do with the suit is a mystery. Selling the prop will prompt immediate suspicion – has the burglary been committed by a fan? It’s far too early to speculate.

Marvel is continuing to enjoy box office domination with Infinity War having become the fastest-grossing billion-dollar movie of all time. It’s looking likely to be the MCU’s biggest hit – and who here is at all surprised? While Iron Man has changed suits more times than your average card dealer, the original prop is a part of movie history and it will hopefully be sourced and brought back to prop storage as soon as possible.
