Is the Jurassic World Sequel a Flop With Critics?by 👨‍💻 Graham Pierrepoint

Might the latest Jurassic film turn out to be extinct on arrival?

Jurassic World – the huge blockbuster revival of the immensely popular Jurassic Park series of movies from the 1990s – became one of the biggest-selling movies of all time upon its release, meaning that a sequel was always going to be likely. It’s safe to say that moviegoers’ thirst for dinosaur rampages went unquenched over the past decade or so, and with a sizeable budget and talented crew and cast set to work behind the revival, there’s little wonder as to why it became such a huge hit. It didn’t do brilliantly across the board with critics at the time – scoring 71% on Rotten Tomatoes, the review aggregator, meaning that while the majority of experts enjoyed the movie or at least thought it was serviceable, 29% didn’t. Cinemascore, which asks moviegoers to grade movies after they have seen them on a scale from A to F, found that viewers enjoyed it enough to offer it an ‘A’ grade average, which is on par with the original Jurassic Park – but will its long-awaited sequel, arriving three years on, live up to the majesty of its predecessor?

Reviews from critics thus far appear to be fairly mixed – though the Rotten Tomatoes scoring system does not seem to suggest that Fallen Kingdom, releasing this week in several territories, offers much of a patch on the first Jurassic World. The movie, which features Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard and Jeff Goldblum (returning from the original dino trilogy), currently sits at a very middling 64% on the Tomatometer, with the consensus offering a positive, yet hardly glowing report. “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom adds another set piece-packed entry to the blockbuster franchise,” the summary reads, “although genuinely thrilling moments are in increasingly short supply.”

Critics, though generally affable towards the movie on the whole, appear to be leading with there being plenty of action, though perhaps not enough to supply much-needed originality and freshness that the series needs. However, what’s here, from most accounts, certainly seems to suffice. The original movie – as stated – was a record-breaker – one which remains a box office marvel – though the general concern in play right now is quite what will happen with the franchise moving forward, at least when it comes to quality. This was an issue which faced the original set of Jurassic Park movies, too – meaning that history may well be repeating itself.
