Game of Thrones: Jon Snow debate rages onby 👨‍💻 Graham Pierrepoint

Game of Thrones is a TV show which continues to court debate amongst fans as much as it courts controversy from those less enraptured by its epic landscapes, dastardly villains and dubious heroes – and while 2015 saw its fifth season air and garner criticism and praise alike (the show grew far away from the canon in George R R Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire novels, on which the series is based upon), anyone who hadn’t been reading the books were left stunned by final scenes in which the popular Jon Snow was murdered and left to die by his own men. The death of Snow caused an outpouring on social media, and since its occurrence, debate has raged on as to whether or not he will be resurrected for season six. While some characters who had been kept in the balance have since been confirmed dead – such as Stephen Dillane’s Stannis Baratheon – many followers of Snow have been keen to put forward theories and evidence that the bastard son of Ned Stark could still be alive.

These rumors were put about mainly due to Snow’s actor, Kit Harington, having been spotted filming new scenes for season six. While this evidence would normally be enough to warrant giving the rumors some weight, Harington has since revealed to the media the real reason behind why he has been seen filming – and that he is to appear in the new season. However, as many got their hopes up, he also confirmed that he would be appearing as a corpse – shattering the hopes and dreams of those who had been fighting for their character’s cause for almost a year.

Snow can be spotted in clips shown as part of the HBO series’ sneak preview, in which it is clear that Harington’s body does indeed remain lifeless – but many propose that these scenes could lead to an eventual resurrection of the character. While it is not unusual for characters to be resurrected in Game of Thrones, the question is how – and also when, as fans tuning into the new season next month will be eager to get closure on Jon Snow’s story as soon as possible, having finally proved himself as a worthy leader of the Night’s Watch in season five. In any case, Game of Thrones returns to HBO on April 24 – until then, a month of speculation will continue!
