Hurricane Donna had already clawed out a claim as one of the 20th century's most destructive and deadly storms when it began heading up the Atlantic seaboard from Daytona, Fla., early on the morning on Sept. 11, 1960.

Left behind in the Keys and along the Gulf Coast was a trail of devastation spawned...
