Were You Affected by Facebook's Data Breach?by 👨‍💻 Adam Yardley

What a year it’s been for Facebook, for Mark Zuckerberg, and for millions of its loyal users. Facing a media storm over allegations with regard to large numbers of user data having been shared without consent to Cambridge Analytica earlier this year, the leading social network has been at the center of what has been the year that people sat up and started worrying about the data they share online.

Facebook has made moves to try and streamline the way that data is kept private to each and every person, but to say that plenty of damage was already done is something of an understatement. While Cambridge Analytica has since gone under, Zuckerberg’s firm has been working away to try and regain the support of the masses – and if recent news regarding a data breach is anything to go by, mass approval may be some way away just yet.

Facebook recently disclosed the appearance of a data breach which may have affected up to 50 million users – that numbers has since been shortened to 30 million, but it’s still a fair chunk of the userbase. Attackers were thought to have taken advantage of a vulnerability in Facebook’s system, and the network is currently handing out notifications to all those believed to have been impacted by the incident.

Those affected appear to be categorized in one of three ways. One set of people had their contact details and full name accessed and stolen (thought to be around half of those impacted). For a further 14 million, plenty more information was accessed – such as likes, pages followed, religion, location status, date of birth and much more. One million more were thought to have been attacked, but had no data stolen.

In any case, the social network is currently acting to deliver security notices to those users believed to have been impacted in the coming days. Therefore, it won’t be long before you are given a brief on what to do if your profile was at stake. You can find out sooner by approaching Facebook directly if you are concerned.

With at least 30 million users' data security compromised, this is a sizeable breach. Let’s see what happens with Facebook in the coming months with regard to this incident – as it no doubt aims to put 2018 behind itself.
