There's A Fourth Type Of Chocolate - And You Could Be Eating It Soonby

While candy is certainly more popular in the US than chocolate, the sweet treat is certainly well-loved throughout the world – and for the longest time, there have been three variations for chocolate lovers to pick from. Dark chocolate, milk chocolate and white chocolate have been widely available for some time – though the latter of these has only been on our shelves for the best part of 80 years. Even so – the thought of a fourth type of chocolate hitting our sweet shops is just too bizarre – or is it?

Enter ruby chocolate – pink chocolate which has supposedly been in the works for over a decade – which is born out of a new type of cocoa bean discovered during research some years ago. Cocoa developer and processor Barry Callebaut is thought to be aiming to bring ruby chocolate to British soil at least by spring next year – and its color is completely natural – so don’t be too panicked about artificial colorings if you fancy giving it a taste!

The decision to push ahead with pink or ruby chocolate is arguably well-timed in a world where so many people share wild and wonderful variations on their favorite foods and snacks online – meaning that the decision to promote such oddly-colored candy could be particularly aimed at young people sharing their treats through platforms such as Instagram, YouTube and Snapchat. If so, it could be a craze that helps to define social media usage in 2018.

The taste of pink or ruby chocolate is thought to be fruity and smooth – with Barry Callebaut confirming that nothing is added to their chocolate mix during the process. This means that the bizarre flavoring – and equally bizarre coloring – is completely natural. Could it be that brightly colored chocolate finds its way into cult status for foodies and snack lovers everywhere in the year ahead?

Anyone who remembers the ‘unicorn’ craze for multicolor food and drink will likely too remember the bizarre phase the internet dipped into when black ice cream became a notion – and ruby chocolate could well be the next foray into culinary oddities. This time, however, it’s completely untouched by additives – meaning that it could well find a solid place next to the three main players in the chocolate game in years to come. Will Hershey or Cadbury take on a pink block or two? Keep your eyes peeled next year!
