The Large Hadron Collider, an immense physics engine based in Switzerland, is currently depended on to help us understand more about how the universe around us works and operates. It’s all about particles – those tiny elements we simply can’t see – and as a result, physicists have been able to generate high intensity experiments in a move to better understand what happens when certain particles collide. This is putting things very simply indeed – the LHC, as it is otherwise known, is perhaps the most advanced tool of its kind, and is even referred to as an experiment by some sources – in any case, it is responsible for both a massive advancement in particle research as well as in an increased media fever for sensationalist headlines.
Gizmodo’s Ryan F Mandelbaum has recently published an important piece which hopes to debunk recent world-ending fears that seem to have arisen and perpetuated themselves across the web regarding what the LHC could do to the planet at large. It appears that a British physicist, Martin Rees, has advised that the system has the potential to bring Earth to its knees – with some sources such as ScienceAlert claiming that it could be ‘crushed to the size of a soccer field’.

Speaking with a number of physicists regarding the re-emerging doomsday frenzy, Mandelbaum confirms that the LHC is more than well-protected by both an attentive safety committee and a theory posited by the late Professor Stephen Hawking – which states that any black holes likely to be created by the machine would simply fizzle into non-existence within seconds. Rees’ proposition that the LHC could create an apocalyptic event has been seized upon by mass media to an alarming extent – but a number of sources have since made efforts to try and settle down any of those who are worried about the potential for global disaster.
“What Prof Rees proposes is effectively impossible and already executed by the previous generation of accelerators and the LHC itself,” Vrije Universiteit Brussel’s Freya Blekman – who works with the LHC – stated. “The particles he predicts would be more likely to be produced at lower energies than high energies.”
Therefore – for now – it seems that any worry over the LHC causing a doomsday event can be set aside – as there’s enough security and personnel involved to prevent the worst from occurring!
