We Might Not Get Brexit at All - According to Theresa Mayby 👨‍💻 Adam Yardley

The UK has really taken something of a front seat in world politics and news this past few weeks, whether it’s the world of football or the political stage, the island has hardly been out of the news this summer. US President Donald Trump is just completing an international visit at the time of writing, and UK Prime Minister Theresa May is continuing to oversee the UK’s departure from the European Union, otherwise known as Brexit – and to say it’s been a bumpy road is putting it mildly. May has clung onto her leadership amid the departure of key cabinet members Boris Johnson and David Davis this past week – and she has taken to social media to advise that there may not be a Brexit at all if her plans are intercepted at any point – perhaps a warning of sorts to those within her own party challenging what is perceived to be a ‘soft’ option. “My message to the country this weekend is simple,” May wrote via Facebook, “We need to keep our eyes on the prize (…) If we don’t, we risk ending up with no Brexit at all.” The Prime Minister’s words are stark, and strong – and come at a time where many believed her to be at her weakest. The PM has been left in a position where key members in Johnson – the outspoken Foreign Secretary who was the face of Brexit during the campaign trail for ‘Leave (the EU)’ – and Davis, who was Brexit Secretary. Essentially, Davis was overseeing talks with the EU – and for him to depart as a result of the direction Brexit is heading in is nothing short of a major blow.

However, May is holding on, having hosted President Trump this past week at her personal residence of Chequers, and having shared a press conference with the leader, after reports that the US President had asserted May was making incorrect moves on Brexit. Trump has since denied these reports – and May has trucked on regardless. These recent strong words and public appearances by May could well strengthen her lead – at a time where she is even perceived by some members of her party as a weak link – can she hold on and see Brexit through, on her best endeavours, into March 2019? Not long now…
