NBC has renewed “New Amsterdam” for three more seasons, NBC Entertainment chairman Paul Telegdy announced during the network’s day at Television Critics Association press tour Saturday.

Starring Ryan Eggold as Dr. Max Goodwin, the medical drama is currently in its second season — which will return from winter hiatus Jan. 14 — and has now been handed a third, fourth and fifth installment, which will take the series through at least the 2022-23 broadcast TV season.

Airing at 10 p.m. on Tuesdays as the lead-out for “This Is Us,” the second season of “New Amsterdam” is currently averaging a 1.7 rating among adults in the advertiser-coveted 18-49 demographic and 9.8 million total viewers, according to Live + 7 Day data from Nielsen.

Along with Eggold, the show stars Janet Montgomery, Freema Agyeman, Jocko Sims, Tyler Labine and Anupam Kher.

The drama is inspired by Dr. Eric Manheimer’s memoir “Twelve Patients: Life and Death at Bellevue Hospital” and his 15 years as medical director at the hospital.

Here’s the official description for Season 2 of “New Amsterdam”:

In the wake of the ambulance crash that ended season one of “New Amsterdam,” medical director Dr. Max Goodwin must grieve the death of someone close to him while continuing his commitment to solve systemic health care issues at the hospital. Add his new responsibilities as a father and his cancer still lingering in the rear-view mirror, everyone around Max has to wonder how long he can sustain this impossible load. But, “How can I help?” is not just Max’s catchphrase, it’s his reason for living. As long as he’s helping others, he’s able to find hope in the most hopeless of places.

David Schulner and Peter Horton executive produce the series, along with Michael Slovis and David Foster.

The drama hails from Universal Television, Pico Creek Productions and Mount Moriah.

The second season of “New Amsterdam” will return with new episodes Tuesday, Jan. 14 at 10/9 on NBC.
