‘Charm City Kings’ Trailer Shows Baltimore Kids Gearing Up for ‘The Ride’ (Video)

You’ve never heard of The Ride? In the first trailer for “Charm City Kings,” the drama that premiered at Sundance, The Ride is when everyone in Baltimore brings out their dirt bikes for a massive display, one that provides some hope and a dream for kids in marginalized communities.

Angel Manuel Soto’s film “Charm City Kings” is a drama about a teenage kid named Mouse who looks to dirt bike riding as a way to feel like a king.

“You’re new to Baltimore. You gotta go to The Ride,” Mouse says to a new girl in town. “You don’t know nothing, do you? Every Sunday in the summer, everybody with a bike show out. There’s bikes as far as you can see.”

“Queen & Slim” up-and-coming actor Jahi Di’Allo Winston stars in “Charm City Kings” alongside rapper Meek Mill making his debut film performance. William Catlett and Teyonah Parris also co-star.

Sony Pictures Classics is releasing “Charm City Kings” after it premiered to buzz at Sundance this January. Sherman Payne wrote the story with some support from Barry Jenkins to examine how the dirt bike scene sets Mouse on a path between a notorious ex-con who can help him ride but exposes him to the danger of gang life, or to the protection of a Baltimore detective who wants him to have a better life than Mouse’s older brother killed on the streets.

Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith are executive producers on the film, which opens in theaters on April 10. Watch the first trailer above.
