This Week in History: April 9th - April 15thby 👨‍💻 Graham Pierrepoint

Human history is incredible – and there are various ways in which we can dip in and out of it. Here at One News Page, we like to take time each Monday to look at some of the most interesting events that have occurred during that particular week – years, decades and even centuries ago. That being said – it’s time once again to take a look at what Aprils gone by have to teach us about the world – step into our time machine and let’s take a look at what went down!

April 9th, 2009 – ‘Star Trek’ Reboot Premieres
It was a bold move – but one which has certainly paid off, with two more movies having raked in the box office dough – as JJ Abrams’ directorial re-imagining of the classic sci-fi staple debuted at the Sydney Opera House.

April 10th, 1925 – ‘The Great Gatsby’ Published
Of course brought to life in recent years in part thanks to the acting talents of Leonardo DiCaprio – F Scott Fitzgerald’s classic novel about the life of a mysterious millionaire first hit bookshelves almost 100 years ago this week.

April 11th, 1968 – Lyndon B Johnson Signs 1968 Civil Rights Act
A hugely important moment in US civil rights history celebrates its 50th birthday this week – as the 1968 act ironed out a number of rights with regard to housing throughout the nation.

April 12th, 1961 – Gagarin Makes History
Russian cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin made space exploration history on this day 57 years ago – as he became the first person to fully orbit the Earth – and it would go on to be one of the most important dates in the Space Race.

April 13th, 1980 – The US Boycotts the Moscow Olympics
In a move which would go on to highlight the tensions between the two nations during the height of the Cold War, the US would make good on their intentions to withdraw, in protest, from the Summer Olympics in Moscow, Russia. With talk of some nations potentially withdrawing from Russia’s soccer World Cup this year, it seems that history may be repeating itself!

April 14th, 1912 – The Titanic Hits an Iceberg
One of the biggest liners of all time – results in one of the biggest tragedies in human history, as the RMS Titanic strikes an iceberg 106 years ago this week.

April 15th, 1755 – Dr Johnson’s Dictionary Published
Regarded as one of the founding fathers of the organised word reference, Dr Samuel Johnson first published his ‘Dictionary of the English Language’ in London, England.

Join us again for more trips through time next week!
