The Week in News: June 30th - July 7thby

Heatwaves are hitting plenty of places north of the equator – and it seems that the news, too, is hotting up. There doesn’t seem to be a week that goes by without some big event taking place in the headlines – and while each week is different from the last, we are always here to make sure you have a full digest of the biggest and most interesting stories that have gone down in the past seven days. As always, here is our rundown of the week in news – allowing you to catch up on anything you may have missed.

Murray Misses Wimbledon
Wimbledon – arguably the most important tournament on the world tennis calendar – started this week, and one big name has withdrawn from this year’s championships as a result of surgery recovery. Andy Murray – the UK star who has won the championships in 2013 and 2016 – pulled out of the tournament at the last minute with a ‘heavy heart’ – stating that, following recent hip surgery, it was ‘too soon’ to play lengthy matches again. It’s a shame – but does this leave everything clear for Roger Federer?

What is Trump Baby?
Donald Trump may be both the most controversial and the most caricatured US President of modern times – and one such caricature will be flying above Parliament Square in London, UK, ahead of his first ‘official’ visit to the country next week. However, it’s since been suggested that the President’s tour itinerary will see the statesman only connect with London briefly during a stopover at the US ambassador’s residence.

Affirmative Action is History
In other Trump news, this week saw big movements in the scrapping of various Obama-era policies with regard to college and educational applications – as it is being reported that the White House may repeal a piece of advice that suggests colleges ensure to admit a certain number of applicants of a certain race. Otherwise known as affirmative action, the move has been met with a mixed reception to say the least.

More Big Teams Leave the World Cup
Germany aren’t the only giants to leave the World Cup – as Spain, Portugal, Argentina and – just at the time of writing – Brazil – crash out, paving the way for only a few teams left to clinch the coveted football trophy (or soccer trophy, depending on where you are in the world). As of the time of writing, only France, Belgium, Russia, Croatia, Sweden or England could win the top prize – are the memes from England fans true – is football ‘coming home’? Will Russia defy the odds and claim victory on home soil? Will France mark 20 years since their first – and last – world cup glory? Will Belgium, Croatia or Sweden shut everyone’s mouths and go for first-time glory? Keep watching – by this time next week, even fewer teams will be left in the game.
