The Week in News: July 7 - 13by

It’s hard to believe another week has been and gone – and yet here we are! It’s been another seven days of dramatic political and entertainment news – some eye-opening, some eye-rolling, some completely unexpected – so let’s take a quick look back at what’s happened over the past week in case you happened to miss any of the bigger stories that came to pass!

The World Cup Rolls On
Yes – the FIFA World Cup finally draws to a close in Russia later this weekend – but we’ve seen huge names fall out of the cup in the past few weeks. This past week, we saw England finally take a tumble at the semi-final stage, falling to Croatia in a tense match that went to extra time – as Belgium, once the tournament favorites, found themselves at similar mercy in their match against France. This, of course, means it’s a France-Croatia final for the first time ever – who will come out on top?

The UK’s ‘Turmoil’
At least, that’s how Trump put it ahead of his visit to the island earlier this week. He’s referring perhaps to ongoing drama regarding Brexit – as key cabinet ministers Boris Johnson and David Davis both resign as a result of ongoing disagreements over Brexit’s progress. Trump himself, too, has suggested that a trade deal with the UK may be unlikely based on Prime Minister Theresa May’s current suggestions. At the time of writing, it’s not clear how the EU will respond to the government’s proposals for Brexit – though some media outlets are suggesting that issues surrounding the Ireland / Northern Ireland border may present further issues.

Johnny Depp Faces Assault Allegations
It seems that the bad news train hasn’t quite finished with actor Johnny Depp this week – as a staffer on an upcoming movie release – in which he worked with the star – alleges that he experienced physical assault on set, and that Depp offered him money to punch the star in the face. It’s a case which also implicates some of the crew, too – it’ll remain to be seen how this one plays out.

The Emmy Nominations Arrive
Nominations for the annual awards given to the best in US TV have rolled out – and shows such as Game of Thrones, Stranger Things, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, The Crown, Patrick Melrose and many more have received nods – with comedy stars such as Larry David, Alison Janney, Donald Glover and Lily Tomlin picking up nominations in their own categories. On the drama side of things, the likes of Elisabeth Moss, Jason Bateman, Ed Harris and Evan Rachel Wood are all up for awards this time around.
