This Week in History: July 16th - July 22ndby

If you’ve been reading our pieces here at One News Page for a while, you may already know the drill by now – each Monday, we take a short trip down memory lane by looking at the stories and moments from years, decades and centuries gone by in each particular week. Whether you’re celebrating a birthday this week or are merely intrigued about Julys from decades ago, it’s time to uncover some of the most interesting moments from this week from years gone by.

July 16th, 1439 – England Bans Kissing
How well would this go down nowadays? As a result of rising cases of the Black Death, kissing one another was outright banned in England back in 1439. Thankfully, the disease seems to have taken a backseat in recent centuries…
Famous Birthday: Ginger Rogers (Actor / Dancer), 1911 - 1995

July 15th, 2017 – Kermit Changes Voice
In a move that shocked the entertainment world, Steve Whitmire – the-then voice of Kermit the Frog – was sacked by the Muppets Studio for ‘unacceptable business conduct’. Muppets creator Jim Henson had previously voiced Kermit up until his death in 1990.
Famous Birthday: David Hasselhoff (Actor / Singer), 65

July 18th, 64 – The Great Fire of Rome

July 19th, 1913 – The First Top Ten?
Yes – we really have been counting down the top ten songs of the week since 1913. The first-ever ‘Best Sellers among Popular Songs’ was published on this day 105 years ago – the first song to top the list was ‘Malinda’s Wedding Day’.
Famous Birthday: Benedict Cumberbatch (Actor), 42

July 20th, 1969 – That’s One Small Step for Man…
The iconic moment to end them all – Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin would take their first steps on the Moon’s surface, the first-ever men to do so. It’s estimated around 530 million people watched the event worldwide – how would that translate into modern figures?
Famous Birthday: Carlos Santana (Musician), 70

July 21st, 1957 – Althea Gibson wins US Title
Trailblazing African-American athlete and tennis star Althea Gibson was the first black person ever to win a major US tennis tournament – she would also be the first to win Wimbledon the same year, and she was also the first to win a Grand Slam title.
Famous Birthday: Robin Williams (Actor / Comedian), 1951 - 2014

July 22nd, 1994 – OJ Simpson’s Official Plea Entered
In what remains one of the most infamous criminal cases on US soil, football and movie star OJ Simpson would plead ‘absolutely, 100% not guilty’ to the charge of murder back in 1994 – and as most US citizens will know by now, it all played out rather dramatically.
Famous Birthday: Alex Trebek (Jeopardy! Host), 77
