Trump Wants to Build a New Wall - And Not in the U.S.

Trump Wants to Build a New Wall - And Not in the U.S.by 👨‍💻 Adam Yardley

One of U.S. President Donald Trump’s leading policies, and certainly one which helped to characterize his election campaign, was that of the motion to build a border wall between Mexico and the US. The move was suggested in an effort to try and curb immigration – and while the wall hasn’t yet been brought to fruition, the policy remains a hallmark Trump decision, and one which will likely remain attached to the President as he inevitably goes down in the history books – love him or hate him.

It’s emerged this week, however, that the President once made a strong suggestion to foreign diplomats that a whole new wall may need to be built elsewhere in the world – even though he has no governing power there. Understanding that he won’t be able to put people to work to build it himself, the Commander in Chief reportedly advised the Spanish government build a border wall across the Sahara desert in an effort to clamp down on similar immigration levels out in the Mediterranean. The news comes as Spanish foreign minister Josep Borrell, who confirmed that there was something of a quandary over just how long the Sahara border actually is.

Trump had promised to build a 2,000 mile wall between the US and Mexico during his 2016 election campaign, and if reports are to be believed, he also considered a wall of similar length would be appropriate across the Sahara desert. The border there reportedly stretches out around 3,000 miles – a third longer than the US-Mexico gap – which Trump supposedly brushed off, keen to advise that the wall would be roughly the same size as the one he is setting up in America.

Borrell revealed Trump’s advice via a public event in Madrid and, as a result, Spanish media widely circulated the soundbite. However, the foreign ministry seems to have distanced itself a little from the admission, which is thought to have been made to Borrell during his visit to the White House in June this year. “We can confirm that’s what the minister said, but we won’t be making any further comment on the minister’s remarks,” Borrell’s ministry stated publicly.

Spain continues to see thousands of migrants attempt to reach the country each year, with almost 34,000 people having attempted to arrive on Spanish shores this year as refugees or otherwise.
