The Week in News: September 29th - October 5thby 👨‍💻 Graham Pierrepoint

October’s here already and things are still weird and wonderful in world news. If there’s not a new Trump story, a new Elon Musk story or a new scientific discovery to talk about – how do we know it’s 2018? Here’s our take on the past seven days in world news just in case you missed any of it!

The Brett Kavanaugh Saga
This week, US President Donald Trump set the ball rolling to install Brett Kavanaugh as part of his new-look Supreme Court. However, an ongoing investigation into Kavanaugh’s alleged sexual misconduct has taken over headlines in recent days, with many coming forward to testify that the nominee was far from the clean-cut figure his own defense has suggested. The saga, at present, continues.

Elon Musk Resigns as Tesla Chairman
Elon Musk is a name that seems to court a new piece of controversy each week just recently – and as part of a settlement with the SEC, has stepped down as Chairman of automobile innovators Tesla and has paid a fine of $20 million. All this comes as a result of the entrepreneur tweeting misleadingly regarding taking Tesla private – which has been seen by many as a fraudulent act. If you’ve been following the news lately, it’s not the first instance this year of Musk’s Twitter habits leading him into a lawsuit.

Venom Debuts
Long-awaited? Possibly – but the first standalone supervillain movie of sorts, starring Tom Hardy, hasn’t really appealed to critics or audiences too well. The Spider-Man villain Venom finally gets his own picture – but it’s met with accusations of poor editing, and of being a clumsy mess – let down by the fact it didn’t possess an R-rating. Could it have followed in Logan and Deadpool’s footsteps? Possibly.

iPhone Xs is Getting Fixed! Eventually
Apple's new iPhone Xs devices have been at the center of charging concerns lately, as extensive testing and reports from users suggest that it simply isn’t charging when on standby or when plugged into a wall socket. Apple have reportedly unveiled a fix as part of their iOS 12.1 release, though fans will have to wait until near the end of the month, it’s thought, before they will be able to charge normally again. Will Apple pick up where they left off and make bank on their latest devices? Check back in a few months.
