Trump Loses Another Big Ally

Trump Loses Another Big Allyby 👩‍💻 Alice Monroe

US President Donald Trump is no stranger to making the news, but it seems it’s his staff and his inner circle which have been courting the main headlines in recent days and weeks. The White House has seen considerable flux during Trump’s term already, and it appears that another one of the President’s most crucial figures in the Oval Office has also called it a day. This time, it’s Donald F McGahn II – who has reportedly been instrumental not only in supporting a number of Presidential processes, but has also been instrumental in upholding certain investigations that Trump has been more than publicly vocal about.

McGahn was a White House counsel to Trump, meaning that he was considered an important figure in aiding the President as well as a number of high-profile decisions and investigations. McGahn’s role has not been simple to say the least. While he played a key role in helping Trump to make Supreme Court decisions during his 21-month tenure, he was also called up as a witness during investigations into whether or not the President willingly obstructed the course of justice.

While he has acted as counsel for Trump, he has also acted as protector of a figure that has earned the ire of the President during his term – Robert Mueller. Mueller’s ongoing investigation into alleged election tampering has generated frustration and bluster on the part of the President, at least via Twitter, over the last few months – and it’s thought that McGahn was also key in preventing Trump from firing Mueller outright. It’s also said that the counsel prevented Trump from reappointing Jeff Sessions, Attorney General, to the Russia investigation.

Not much is known about McGahn’s departure at this time, save for the fact that he has departed the White House having conversed with the President for one last time. Well-regarded in Republican circles, the counsel was a considerable force in some of Trump’s successes as President thus far, but he has also stuck firm to his role as protector to the special counsel – as well as a witness in ongoing, controversial investigations.

McGahn is the latest name to depart the White House in recent weeks, with UN Ambassador Nikki Haley having been the last Trump ally to resign from such a post. It’s safe to say that Trump’s White House looks considerably different to how it did at the start of his tenure.
