In midterm elections which proved to be the most important in recent US political history, the Democrats have successfully regained control of the House of Representatives, while the Republican Party has retained power over the Senate. The Democrats took control of the House for the first time in eight years, which will have a knock-on effect for US President Trump and his White House team for the next two years, leading up to the 2020 General Election.

At the time of writing, further final results are still expected to roll in – as forecasts suggest that the 2018 midterms could offer the highest voter turnout in 48 years. That’s a record turnout expected to roll in at around 47%, meaning that extra effort to encourage people to vote this year certainly appears to have paid off.

Voting statistics show that there appears to be a slight edge for the Republicans in the white vote, while Hispanic and black voters turned out for the Democrats in the majority. It’s also been confirmed that the Democrats have claimed two seats in Florida, one of the most important swing seats in the country, while also claiming four from the Republicans in Pennsylvania. The election appears to have been successful in some way for both parties, though the news that Democrats will have a larger say in the House means there will be greater scrutiny held over President Trump’s actions and motions in the next 24 months.

The BBC’s Anthony Zurcher suggests that the change in majority in the House not only means that there may be renewed scrutiny into Trump’s financial affairs, but that there may be renewed interest in pressing for the impeachment of the President. “It takes a simple majority of the House to undertake the first step to removing a President, and the Democrats now have that majority,” Zurcher writes. “Up until now, members of the Democratic congressional leadership have been downplaying the prospect of starting that particular ball rolling.”

Trump’s win over the Senate, however, is certainly good news from a Republican standpoint. It is a series of results which offer significant wins on both sides – meaning that the next two years could be pivotal not only for a number of reasons relating to US domestic and foreign policy, but also for the status of the Trump Presidency, period.
