Why One Stray Tweet Has Thrown The UK-US Bond Into Chaosby

Donald Trump’s use of Twitter is no secret – he’s widely used the social media platform to offer his own opinions and spin on various events in the world at large – on some occasions creating controversy and drumming up a number of stories and headlines that have been picked up by the print and internet media elsewhere. While Trump has largely avoided much of the media on the grounds of their publishing ‘fake news’, the US President has effectively been creating his own media and news network through his own Twitter-based gusto. This week is no different – as it has emerged one particular retweet has caused a particular stir over in the UK.

Trump had retweeted videos posted by controversial anti-Muslim group Britain First – who have gained notoriety for making claims regarding radical Islamification in the UK – and British Parliament has taken the move to denounce his decision in retweeting content published by the group. Prime Minister Theresa May, for one, has already criticised the US President for his actions – only for Trump himself to effectively denounce May in return – where else – but via Twitter.

“Don’t focus on me, focus on the destructive Radical Islamic Terrorism that is taking place within the United Kingdom. We are doing just fine!” advises Trump in a tweet which has been spread by a further 32,000 users and has captured a number of its own headlines in the wake of a relatively rare rebuke from Prime Minister May. This latest exchange offers a rather dampening blow to proceedings, following a year of May attempting to re-ingratiate Britain with the US in an effort to try and re-strengthen the famous ‘special relationship’. The Prime Minister has since been widely criticised by her own citizens and some rival MPs for being too ‘soft’ on a number of stances Trump has positioned himself upon – helping to add up towards a rather difficult year for the British leader.

Now, however, it seems that May is willing to fight back – and many in the press are calling for a u-turn on any plans to allow Trump into the UK on any kind of visit.

Trump's latest tweets may have appealed to those in his corner, however, they have done little to curry favor with those across the pond. Will the special relationship survive? Keep an eye on Trump’s Twitter!
