One News Page Staff Tuesday, 20 February 2018
The Week in History: February 19th - February 25thby

It’s hard to believe that we’re almost a sixth of the way into the year already – however, as avid readers of One News Page will agree, a year is certainly a long time as far as all of the events that have occurred from day to day will stack up and tell you! It’s time again for us to take a further dip into the past – get ready to see exactly what went down in history this week, years, decades and maybe even centuries ago…

February 19th, 1985 – ‘Eastenders’ Debuts on UK Television
One for our UK readers – the BBC’s long-running soap opera ‘Eastenders’, based around the lives of a busy market square in London (and they’re often more murky and dramatic than that sounds) – celebrates its 33rd birthday this week, and it’s still going strong.

February 20th, 1877 – ‘Swan Lake’ Debuts
It’s inarguably one of the most famous – and most important – ballets of all time, and Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake this week celebrates its 141st birthday since it first opened at Moscow’s Bolshoi Theatre

February 21st, 1953 – Crick and Watson’s DNA Discovery
It was a moment that has shaped human biological study for decades – and this week, we celebrate 65 years since James Watson and Francis Crick first discovered the molecular structure of DNA.

February 22nd, 1997 – We Cloned a Sheep!
It’s already been 21 years since we witnessed the announcement that Dolly – a sheep – was the first of her kind to be cloned. It would open the doors to millions of possibilities – ones which may well apply to humans in the near future.

February 23rd, 1896 – The Tootsie Roll is Born
What’s your favorite sweet treat? If you said Tootsie Roll, you may well be interested to hear that the snack was invented 128 years ago this week!

February 24th, 2008 – Castro Resigns as Cuban President
In a landmark moment in world politics, veteran Cuban President Fidel Castro announced his retirement from his position after almost fifty years in the job – the majority of a lifetime for many people!

February 25th, 1862 – Lincoln Brings Greenbacks to US
If you’re a US citizen, you’ve only been using paper money for around 156 years – and it’s thanks to then-President Abraham Lincoln that you are doing so to this day.

Join us again for more timely trips next week! Same place – but different times!
