Monday -- i'm kara conrad.
I hope you all had a wonderful weekend.
We had great weather -- which made for a perfect weekend to go horseback riding.
I haven't been since i was younger when my dad took me and i've wanted to go again ever since.
I ask to go every year on my birthday but i haven't so i was really excited to go.
Anyway -- we headed to maybury brook stables in mcgraw and took a great ride through the fall foliage and it was breathtaking.
But we also learned that the farm isn't just about trail rides.
Jake: here we just do the fun leisurely riding.
Melanie has a few people that like to do the lessons and the showing and stuff we just do a lot of the fun trail riding we just enjoy to go out on the horse and be part of it.
And i was able to be part of that fun trail ride.
A beautiful weekend to see what maybury brook stables has to offer.
"so left foot goes in here, grab the saddle horn with one hand and swing right up over."jake: maybury brook stables does horseback riding for children and adults of all ages we go from three years old to 100 years old and older if they are.
What we do is we do horseback riding, we do trail rides, we do lessons, birthday parties, i mean you name it an d if it's got a horse involved we could probably do it.
Uhm, we've done graduation parties, weddings, i mean just all kinds of fun filled things with horses.
It's a great event for everybody.maybury brook stables is also involved in other events -- including one right in binghamton called santa days.
Jake: santa days is an event that we do.
We have teamed up with visions hotels incorporated.
They own several hundred throughout the northeast and everywhere, i guess.
And they've contracted with us and what we do is called santa days and it's santa vision and it's a day out with santa for the community and it's all free to the public.
The kids come and they meet santa claus, they get a present, we do pony rides at the hotels.
We go all over the place rochester, canindaugua, buffalo, binghamton, i mean we're just all over the place.
It starts the weekend after thanksgiving and we go straight through christmas, straight through december for four weeks so we're at eight different hotels throughout the month and it's just a fun time for everybody to see santa and the ponies at the hotels and get all kinds of fun stuff.
The horses are fun to ride but they are also used for something else.
Jake: horseback riding is a wonderful therapy for the special needs.
The special needs are a wonderful group of people in the community and they just love horseback riding.
Sometimes if you get a child that doesn't want to do anything and they're just aggravated and upset with everything that you've tried usually horseback riding fixes that cure.
It just has that healing touch with the horse and the person that they just fall in love and they keep coming back over and over again.coming back over and over again isn't hard especially because the farm is open all year round.
Jake: honestly we run all year round.
We're open 365 days a year all with the exception of hunting season.
Probably the middle of november about november 15th we shut down for about a month for shot gun season.
Other than that we're open as long as the weather is decent we ride through the snow.
There's nothing better than going out through the open field and having the snow glisten underneath your horses feet and hearing the ice crunch it's just beautiful.
Something else that's beautiful -- the story of the horses.
Some were born and bred there while others we're rescued.
Jake: now and then we get phone calls from people that either they've run out of hay or they just decide that they can't afford to take care of the horses anymore and we go in and we rescue them, we bring them home, we doctor them if they need doctoring, we do what we need to do to get them back in to healthy situations.
Work with them, get them trained and then sometimes we keep them and use them right here on the farm, sometimes we rehome them to great homes and we check on them homes to make sure everybody is doing good.
Jake says he loves the animals and when he's not on the farm he's thinking about being on the farm.
I love animals and when you're not on the farm, you know it because you're stuck in the office or whatever working and you're just like 'god, it's such a nice beautiful day i want to be out on my horse right now.'
So usually we just like to come up and go riding and working with the community and everything we meet so many people it's just amazing to know where people are from and what they do for a living and everything.
It's just a wonderful feel to just know what people do and say in the community.
Maybury brook stables is just outside of cortland in mcgraw.
It's an easy drive right off of interstate 81.
The farm offers a variety of services including horseback riding, riding lessons and pony rides for birthday parties.
