USI Students Freshen Up Decades Old Tradition

keeping years' old holiday traditions fresh and modern ... can sometimes be hard to do. but at the university of southern indiana they are working to keep a decades old ceremony new and different. 44news reporter jeff goldberg is here with how the students continue their christmas lighting ceremony. it's hard to get students excited about anything these days -- especially an age-old tradition that's nearing its third decade. but you wouldn't have been able to tell on monday when the u-s-i students held their annual quad christmas lighting. the usi campus came alive monday evening with the sounds of everyone's favorite winter holiday. nat pop: "we wish you a merry christmas and a happy new year" the voices of hundreds of students echoed into the night as they gathered for the christmas quad lighting nat pop: "that's the jingle bell... that's the jingle bell... that's the jingle bell rock." the tradition is now 27 years old -- older than many of the students but the sentiment is still the same. tyeesha jones says: "it really recognizes the usi community and how we all come together for caroling and just really showing the event on campus." with smart phones and social media - it becomes harder and harder to entice students to come out on a cold november night and celebrate christmas a month ahead of time. tyeesha recognized that - and tried something new for the 20-17 lighting. tyeesha says: "i really wanted to reinvent lighting a tradition i really wanted to bring more to the campus and bring people back to the community and really make this very exciting so we have an inflatable snowglobe out in the university center so people can take pictures and have their own little moment we have a trackles train." the improv'd event was met with smiles and laughter from the crowd of hundreds of students who say they were loving every minute. carolen goku says: "ya a lot of fun so it's amazing what's provided from the usi and everything it makes so much fun it makes for a great experience so ya i love it." ben brumfield says: "ah yeah it's a good time i got my good friend mark here with me you'll see him dabbing it's great and it's just a good time we get to sing goof off and be with our friends just enjoy the community." so as the carolers voices rang out in the distance -- their cheer could only be matched with hundreds of lights across campus. nat pop: "3...2...1! wooo!" the tradition used to be to light a twenty foot tree inside -- before the event was moved onto the quad in 20-08. jg 44news. president trump ... tries
