Incredible Space Images of Hawaii Volcano As New Fissures Leak Toxic Gas
The devastation of Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano continues as it continues to leak lava and toxic sulfur dioxide gas.
????Image from NASA’s Terra satellite show lava flows and a long plume of the colorless but awful smelling sulfur dioxide, which can irritate skin and mucous membranes.
????Both lava-oozing fissures and the gas have prompted evacuations in the East Riff Zone according to NASA.
????The volcano’s destruction has already destroyed dozens of homes and force around 1,800 resident to flee the area, according to NBC News.
????Volcanologist at Arizona State University in Tempe, Kayla Iacovino says, "these images can also aid in the creation of new volcanic hazard maps, which help the public make informed choices about where to build (or buy) a new home."????Kilauea is considered to be one of the world's most active volcanoes and sits on the southeastern part of Hawaii’s Big Island.
