Police urge people to have a game plan in case of crash on winter roads

Rock county reporter adam duxter is in janesville with a look at the road conditions there... and what you should do if you find yourself in a predicament.

Highways like the beltline and 39/90 get the top priority in winter storms like the one's we're seeing lately.... but the police who patrol these roads know that spinouts, stalls and crashes are common on night's like tonight... and are urging people to have a gameplan... if they find themselves in need of help.

For the second time in four days... the city of janesville is declaring a snow emergency... making the roads difficult for everyone, says janesville police officer steven carpenter.... (((iofficer steven carpenter///jane sville police department)))) it's even a hazard to us as first responders carpenter says on friday... the department dealt with it's fair share of winter related calls.... and says on nights like tonight... if you're stuck waiting for a tow... to be patient.

(((iofficer steven carpenter///jane sville police department)))) we go through their list and what we prioritize, and what calls for resources at certain times.

We will get there, it just may take a little bit of time due to the high call volume.

And never to leave your car.... (((iofficer steven carpenter///jane sville police department)))) if you're wearing dark clothing, you're nearly invisible.

And that while it might be tempting to stop and help someone.... (((iofficer steven carpenter///jane sville police department))))it's difficult for human beings not to help others, that's why we do what we do.

That's not always the best thing to do..... (((iofficer steven carpenter///jane sville police department)))) all too often sometimes people get beyond their abilities, which certainly can cause some issues.

If it's one vehicle that's stuck in the snow, now we have two or three people that are stopping officer carpenter is a 13-year veteran at the janesville police department... and that means 13 winters similar to this one.... he says the most common error he sees that leads to trouble is people driving distracted even in winter conditions... and says putting your phone down... can make all the difference on a night like tonight.

Adam duxter in janesville tonight...
