Judge gives green light to Trump ban on gun 'bump stocks'

A U.S. federal judge ruled Monday (February 25) that a ban on bump stocks can move forward.

The rapid-fire gun attachment has been used to carry out mass casualty shootings including the deadliest in modern U.S history: a 2017 shooting in Las Vegas where a single gunman killed 58 people, leaving hundreds more injured.

The ban was announced by President Donald Trump late last year... (SOUNDBITE) (English) U.S. PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP, SAYING: "This morning we also completed the process to issue a new regulation banning bump stocks The ban's set to go into effect in just weeks but it faces challenges by pro-gun groups with at least five federal lawsuits.

U.S. District Judge Dabney Friedrich rejected one of those suits.

In her 64-page ruling on a case brought by the Firearms Policy Coaltion writing "None of the plaintiffs' challenges merit preliminary injunctive relief." In a statement posted on twitter, the Firearms Policy Coalition writes "we are disappointed but unsurprised by the Court's ruling tonight denying a temporary injunction to protect Americans from an unlawful and unconstitutional regulation." The coalition says their attorneys have already filed an appeal.

Under the new rule current owners of bump stocks have until March 26th to either destroy or hand in their gun accessories.
