New Zealand police say they're hunting for an active shooter in the city of Christchurch.

A gunman opened fire at a mosque in the city center - several victims have been rushed to the hospital.

Schools and council buildings in the area have been placed into lockdown.

Police cautioned residents to stay indoors.

Local media is reporting that the gunman opened fire inside the mosque, but police haven't yet confirmed if it was inside or nearby.

Witnesses told local TV they say saw several people lying on the ground.
