Microsoft XCloud vs. Google Stadia: Battle Of the Game Streaming Services

Microsoft and Google are going toe-to-toe on game streaming.

At GDC, Google announced Stadia, a game streaming platform coming in 2019.

Microsoft has been teasing its own game streaming project, called XCloud, which is also expected to arrive later this year.

While there are many unanswered questions about either service, XCloud and Stadia have a few things in common.

Both aim to make it possible to stream games on any device, and to play with whomever you want.

Both are using their own public clouds (Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud) to power the experience.

And both say that community will be a big part of their success.

In Google's case, Stadia is also anchored by YouTube, and the company believes that it can convert its large following of gameplay watchers into players with a "Play Now" button on YouTube, which will launch viewers directly into a game.

Microsoft, meanwhile, already has a large footprint in gaming through Xbox, and hopes to take those dedicated gamers along with it when XCloud hits the market.

Neither Microsoft nor Alphabet has announced a release date for their game streaming services, nor have they announced pricing.

Alphabet, Amazon and Microsoft are holdings in Jim Cramer's Action Alerts PLUS Charitable Trust Portfolio.
