Tuesday Morning Sprint

Morning sprint.

Chris reece is calling for a great day to get outside... before rain chances come back later this week.

But we start with josh spreiter -- on why you should spend your kid's spring break -- getting them the flu vaccine -- josh.

Lots of families are on spring break this week ... and doctors say it's a good time to get your kids vaccinated before you get on a plane or pile into the family minivan.

We're in the middle of a second wave of flu season that hasn't even peaked yet... more than half the country is seeing high levels of flu- like illnesses ... with 390 flu- related hospitalizations being reported in wisconsin last week.

A new flu strain going around right now has more severe symptoms than the strain that went around earlier this year.

The good news -- this strain is covered by this year's flu vaccine.

Along with another surge in flu cases... the c-d-c is reports some of the highest numbers for the measles in more than two decades.

There have been at least 314 cases reported so far this year... 46 this past week alone.

Measles has shown up in 15 states... with the largest outbreaks in washington state and new york.

The trump administration is calling for the affordable- care-act to be struck down.

In a filing with a federal appeals court, the justice department said it agreed with a texas judge's ruling-- that invalidated the obama-era health-care law.

That filing represents a major shift from the administration's stance under former attorney general jeff sessions... that took issue with protections for people with pre-existing conditions, but said the rest of the law could stand.

The house will vote today on whether to over-ride the president's first veto since taking office.

That veto blocked a resolution passed by congress to overturn his national emergency declaration to fund a wall at the u-s mexico border.

Both the house and senate need a two-thirds majority to override that veto... which is unlikely.

The pentagon told congress yesterday they've approved the transfer of a billion dollars to start wall construction.

Today: mostly sunny and pleasant.

High: 48 wind: light s tonight: mostly clear and not as cold.

Low: 30 wind: s 6-12 mph 0:43 "mental health professionals have told us, you know, the impact of sandy hook, you're not going to see the full impact of that incident until years later.

" 0:51 that's newtown, connecticut's police chief -- talking about the 2012 shooting at an elementary school.

The sandy hook community is dealing with another loss this morning... after the father of a six-year-old girl who was killed -- took his own life.

Officials say jeremy richman's body was found at his office yesterday -- with no signs of foul play.

The non-profit he helped co- found to combat violence -- released a statement... saying his mission will continue to be carried out.

Employees at a middleton software company... including the ones who were shot by a coworker... are back at that office this morning.

Paradigm - formerly known as w-t-s paradigm - posted on facebook that the office has been repaired and remodeled since last september's workplace shooting.

Four employees were shot... and all of them have come back to their fulltime positions.

The shooter was shot and killed by law enforcement.

Madison police are investigating an overnight robbery at a motel near east towne mall.

Officers say around 2-30 this morning... two people came into the super 8 motel to ask about a room.

Then as the clerk checked his computer -- one of them pulled out a handgun.

Police say the suspects checked the desk area for valuables and ran off.

Firefighters in cross plains are looking into the cause of a fire at a tavern along highway 14 overnight.

A call came in around 12-30 this morning for a fire at coach's club.

The fire was contained to the kitchen... and no injuries were reported... crews were on scene overnight... and closed lanes of that main street for a couple hours.

0:52 "when you've got a systemic racial problem, an individual response isn't enough."

0:58 the a-c-l-u of wisconsin wants immediate action -- over what students at a milwaukee-area high school are calling a "growing atmosphere of racial hostility."

Last month... a video posted to social media shows greendale high schoolers laughing and using racial slurs... another involves a fifth grader.

The a-c-l-u is calling for systemic change... and training for teachers on prevention and intervention.

We expect another decision later today on the laws passed during last december's lame duck session.

Five unions filed a lawsuit last month... arguing the laws violate separation of powers laid out in the state constitution.

A dane county judge heard hours of arguments yesterday... and could now issue a preliminary injuction to block the laws or parts of them.

Republican lawmakers have already said they plan to ask to appeal the ruling that temporarily blocked those laws.

If you're planning a vacation to door county this summer... there might be another 70 acres of campground for you to choose from.

Wisconsin public radio reports the "door bluff headlands park" is looking at a half-a-million- dollar expansion.

The parks superintendent says no tax dollars will be spent on that purchase... but rather grants and donations.

The deadline for the deal is july 15-th.

6:5 now... let's turn it over to josh timm with a look at your first-alert traffic.

Today: mostly sunny and pleasant.

High: 48 wind: light s tonight: mostly clear and not as cold.
