WCBI NEWS AT TEN - April 14, 2019

Multiple tornados swept through the area over night, leaving one man dead in monroe county.

And leaving its mark across several counties...demoli shing homes, buildings and trees..

Thanks joining us tonight, i'm jory tally.

Monroe county leaders held a press conference this morning to update people on the damage.

Road manager sony clay confirmed one person died and 4 people were taken by ambulance to the hospital, along with 15 others taken by other vehicles.

Public service commissioner brandon presley says about 2,500 people were left without power..

"it appears we may have had two tornados that hit the county.

One hit here, right below hamilton.

It played out between here and smithville.

Another one picked up and went out in the northeast part of the county into what we call the pierce chapel area."

"up in the north part of the county we had trees all in the roads.

Some homes were damaged up that way, a lot of local flooding in the amory area and up in the smithville area and the hadley area."

"it's definitely heart-breaking.

It's a subtle reminder of what we saw several years ago in smithville and it was painful, really."

Amory city hall is currently collecting donations for the hamilton community.

The losses in monroe county are being measured tonight in sadness and memories.

One person was killed during the storm.

Tonight the victim's neighbors are mourning the loss of roy ratcliff, a man they called their friend.

Our cash matlock has more.

"a warning came over the phone, the power went off, and the house came off the blocks."

Wayne henry has lived on center hill road in hamilton for almost 30 years.

He says he's seen many storms blow through the area... but nothing compares to this one.

"every vehicle, the home, boats, everything is totally lost."

"i realize all of this stuff can be replaced, but you don't realize that until it happens.

You just think it's another day.

I was already making plans to do another job today.

Now... boy have i got a job..."

When henry and his daughter made it their friend, it was too late.

They say their neighbor was asleep in his center hill road home, when the tornado swept over, causing a tree to crash through his bedroom and onto his bed.

"real good fella, going to miss him a lot.

We could use a lot more people like that in this world."

And a few roads away on collins lane, members of the gardner family are thankful for a phone call.

"my husband and i were sleeping, and my daughter lives in steens and she called and woke us up and informed us of the tornado.

We barely had enough time to get up and get in a closet, an interior closet."

Mona gardner says it's an experience she'll never forget.

"we could hear the tornado.

We could hear the trees.

We felt them hit the house.

It was extremely nerve racking."

"i didn't know if we'd come out and there'd be a house left."

And as for the future... the folks in hamilton have a plan.

"i know from now on i'll have a storm cellar.

I really will.

I'l have me a storm cellar."

"clean up.

Recoup.

Keep praying."

The monroe county sheriff's office has issued a curfew from 8pm until 6am for hamilton and the other effected areas.

Another part of monroe county was also hit by the overnight twisters.

The oak hill community was struck by a tornado early this morning as storms moved through the area.

Although no one was hurt, trees snapped, and several homes had windows blown out, along with roof damage.

Neighbors, friends and family were on the scene quickly, helping clean all of the damage left behind.

They say they have a lot to be thankful for.

Property, like here at my brother's place, property, trees, can be replaced, but life is precious..

There was a four legged survivor.

Francis was in her kennel in the backyard, when the tornado picked it up and threw it in a nearby wooded area.

She was reportedly startled, but is now doing fine.

First look several tornadoes have been confirmed.

There was an ef-2 near hamilton and and ef-1 near greenwood springs.

Both in monroe county.

An ef-2 occurred southwest of starkville and and ef-1 brushed the msu campus.

Additional tornadoes may still be confirmed.

Wcbi's aundrea self talked to people who say though there is some damage to their property, they're grateful it was not worse.

"my kids called us and said you have twelve minutes.

So my husband said, 'hit the bathroom.'

Patsy prisock and her husband, john, have hit the bathroom before during a tornado warning.

This is the first time she truly felt afraid.

"we could hear the bumping and knocking and it was just; it was scary."

When the winds calmed, john prisock ventured out to do a quick check on their property in the craig spring commuity.

Initially, it appeared they had just minimal damage.

"well it's interesting.

Most of the damage occurred on the west side of the house.

And it just so happens i went out the east side first and i said, wow, this is not too bad.

But when i stepped out on the front porch and looked around.

Oh my goodness.

I didn't know what to say."

Just up the street from their house, a graveyard with topped tombstones.

People spent the morning trying to put them back in place.

And the one piece of property with no damage.

This small community chapel.

All along this road here in the craig springs community of oktibbeha county, there are uprooted trees in every direction.

There's damage to homes.

But you also see neighbors helping neighbors.

"it's just been wonderful i hope everywhere out there people have communities like we do."

And on the other side of oktibbeha county, in the hillbrook neighborhood, another couple huddled together when the tornado warning was issued.

"went to bed early last night and the wife ran into bedroom and an woke me up because she was watching tv.

Said we got to get in the hall fast and it was roaring very loud then."

The high winds uprooted trees and snapped branches throughout the neighborhood.

It even toppled this tractor.

Both couples say they know it could have been much worse.

I checked my house.

It was fine.

My neighbor's roof was damaged a little bit, but gratefully we're fine.

"blessed, very blessed."

In oktibbeha county.

Speaker 2: so you can prep ahead, pop it in the oven, and then open it on your guest's table.

Sarah pannell: love it.

Speaker 2: so it's really one of those things where you set it down, they open their own, and all these fresh flavors come out, all these colors from your veggies.

Perfect.

Sarah pannell: all right, well let's just hop right into it, because i'm dying to try it!

Speaker 2: yes.

Speaker 2: remove the bottom root from the leeks and thinly slice the white parts.

Add them to a bowl of water, separating the rings with your fingers, allowing any sand or dirt to fall to the bottom of the bowl.

Thinly slice the fennel and the carrots and set aside.

Speaker 2: lay a piece of parchment paper down on a baking sheet and preheat your oven to 425 degrees.

Stack the veggies on the bottom first, topping with the salmon.

Season everything up with celtic salt and red pepper flakes, and then take the zest of a lemon and sprinkle it over top.

Finish with a pad of kerrygold butter and slowly fold the parchment paper over the corners to make a nice little pouch.

Speaker 2: drizzle with olive oil and pop into the preheated oven for about 15 to 17 minutes, just until your salmon's cooked through.

Speaker 2: and then i just put a knife on the table, and let them cut into their own, and that little steam comes out.

Sarah pannell: okay.

Speaker 2: i'll let you put some fennel fronds right on top.

Let's dig in.

Friday-easter thanks for joining us.

I'm chris bolton.

It wouldn't be sunday if we didn't have sec baseball super bulldog weekend finishing out and msu going for the series sweep over alabama bottom 1st, 2 runners on and no outs...justin foscue lines one down the right field line...jake mangum and jordan westburg turn from dawgs to cheetahs and race home for a 2-0 lead.

Foscue would get a double.

Dustin skelton up to bat...and he knocks the ball right up the middle to bring in foscue...dawgs doing damage early as they head into the 2nd inning with a 3 run lead top 2nd, jt ginn starting on the mound...gets the strike out.

Dueces.

Holla at ya playa!!

For the first out of the inning bottom 2nd...westburg up to bat but who else??

Jake mangum sees second and takes second base westburg can't get anything going but tanner allen doubles out to right..and mangum comes into home for his second run of the game...he joined the 200 run club today as well now the return of the mac...elijah macnamee knocks one through left center and brings allen in to score and plenty more runs to follow, rowdy jordan keeps the momentum going with a hit of his own...brings macnamee into score...the 6th run in just the second inning msu keeps racking the runs up and put a shalaking on alabam winning, 13-3 finishing out the weekend with a series sweep.

Here's what coach lemonis had to say after the win.

Lemonis: "we talked about it last night and we talked about it this morning.

You know the difference in sweeping or going 2-1 is a three game difference or a one game difference.

For us we need to make up some ground so it was big for us this weekend and as we move forward."

Allen: "been coming up here early before games and hitting and developing a good routine.

I feel like that's what got me out of my slump.

That's not saying next game i don't come out here and go four/three k's, it's a crazy game, but right now i'm seeing the ball very well."

Ginn: "ready to get back out there and they got my back.

This team's so close.

You come to the dugout and they're picking you up.

I mean they know.

They just want me to get back out there and give my team a chance to win every day."

Tough day for ole miss as they struggle against kentucky.

That's ball game.

Tough loss for the rebs as they drop both games today.

More news out of oxford as ole miss guard devontae shuler has reportedly declared for the nba draft.
