Extinction Rebellion Protesters Cheer as Police Make Fresh Arrests on Waterloo Bridge
Extinction Rebellion protesters cheered as Metropolitan Police officers continued to arrest members of the demonstration on Waterloo Bridge on April 16.
Protesters initially gathered on the bridge and at Marble Arch, Parliament Square, Oxford Circus and Piccadilly Circus on Monday, April 15, with 113 arrests made by police between then and Tuesday morning.
In a statement issued on Tuesday afternoon, the Met Police Chief Superintendent Colin Wingrove said that “we so far have 55 bus routes closed and [have had] 500,000 people affected as a result”.
The demonstrations part of a number of protest actions that began on Monday in the UK and worldwide under the Extinction Rebellion banner.
Organizers hope that if enough protesters get arrested, it will force a mediation with governments.
