Louisville police chief L.M. Claiborne retires after 39-year career

For retirement after almost four decades in law enforcement.

Wtvas nicole dantzler is live in louisville to tell us more about chief l-m claiborne's 39- year career i spoke with chief claiborne today as he plans to retire next month.

He tells me he's ready to do more in the church, spend more time with his family and do more of his favorite hobby...fishing.

((take pkg)) "where did time go?"

That was l-m clairborne junior's first reaction as he prepares for retirement.

He made history throughout his thirty nine and a half year career in law enforcement.

He became the first african american louisville police chief back in 2006.

But before that he had his start with the state highway patrol in 1980.

((take sot)) "that weekend after i graduated, i got in my car and drove to louisville mississippi and as they say and the rest is history.

I've been here ever since."

L.m claiborne-louisville police chief rt-0:08 claiborne spent most of his life here in louisville where he met his wife and raised his two children.

He climbed through almost every ranking in the state highway patrol from trooper first class to colonel and served in the state army national guard at the same time.

He served in various capacities as training officer, crime scene investigator and traffic accident deconstructioni st just to name a few.

Claiborne received several certificates pertinent to his career and served in the u-s army infantry.

((take sot)) "even during all those years when i worked in jackson, my home was still in louisville."

He's still our chief and we'll say goodbye later but it's not really goodbye because he's a louisville man and always will be."

With the new incoming police chief taking over soon, claiborne thinks ahead to what he wants to do in his next chapter of life.

And thats being more active and engaged in church, in the community and in serving god.

He retires at the end of june.
