It was a very special day... for some very special athletes here in our area... as they got a chance to meet their heroes in uniform.
Kezi 9 news reporter jessica babb was at the annual torch run for the special olympics... and had a chance to see the smiles that it put on a lot of faces.
Sot: "happiness, proud, you're doing this for the world."
Those were just some of the emotions special olympics athletes running in the torch run were feeling.
Sot: "we run with cops and i love doing it every year, it's fun.
Local law enforcement officers and other personnel have been participating in the run since the 80's -- and they say i's something they look forward to each year.
Sot: "they are a group of athletes that go out every day and put adversity to the test and really come out on top every time.
Kendrick helps coach some of the athletes and says they have a positive impact on him.
He says it's his 10th year running.
On cam: the race ended here at the valley river center.
A coordinator for the special olympics program says it means a lot to have so much community support.
Sot: "i always get a great feeling of watching our athletes run with the police officers."
The run is happening around the state -- all leading up to the summer soccer invitational that will be held in providence park in portland on june 7th.
And at the end of the day..
Sot: "i love doing sports with the special olympics."
The goal is to raise awareness for the many atheletes who accomplish so much.
