Jordan: kansas city university plans to build a dental school.
K-c-u research showed theres a dramatic shortage of 750 dentists in the four state area.
As lisa olliges reports -- its a plan all believe will help health care overall.
Poor oral health leads to poor overall health and this shiortage of dnetists in this region is nothing short of a public health emergency."
So kcu wants to build an 80 million dollar college of dental medicine..
Breaking iground in 2020 adn welcome the first 80 studnets in 2022..
Kcu will put up 40 million.."we have secured nearly 50 percent of the fund raising goal, thats 20 million dollars."
Like the medical school it will be named after donor harry cornell..
"this is not just for today this is for tomorrow."rudy farber a donor will help lead the fund drive as he did with the medical school soemthing he called a win win for joplin and kcu..
Rudy "we did say this was going to be like droppinga stone in teh water and you never know where those ripples are gonna go."
There woudl be an 80 chair clinic on the campus where studnets woudl work during their trianing but as they near graduation they would work in the community.
Ultimately every years there will be 80 4th year dental studetns out inthe community all over the region delivering oral health care to the patients who might not otherwise get that care if it weren't for the students... and koelbl says inflammation in the mouth is now linked to cardiovascular disease and disabetes among others making their role more important.
Dnetists are in a really good posstion some systemic illnessses show up first in the oral cavity..
And so by triasning studnets in human mediciine an udnerstaing what those symptoms are it can allow dentists to be the early warning system if you will..
In joplin lisa olliges kaom news " jordan: the timetable is contingent on the fundraising for the other 20 million but c-e-o marc hahn says hes optimistic with the medical schools track record of success..
The dental school will create more than 200 jobs when up and running -- and should generate an economic impact of 45 million dollars ..
