Netanyahu Announces New Golan Settlement, 'Trump Heights'
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on June 16 unveiled a planned “new settlement” in the Golan Heights named after US President Donald Trump.
The land, on the Syria-Israel border, has been occupied by Israel since 1967.
In March, the US became the first country to recognize Israeli sovereignty over the territory.
Despite the fanfare around the unveiling of Trump Heights, the present temporary government in Israel cannot officially approve such a new community.
Haaretz reported that no new community in the Golan Heights was actually set up on Sunday.
“The proposal put before the cabinet to found the new community includes no real steps toward its establishment,” journalist Noa Landau wrote.
Trump responded on Twitter thanking Israel and Netanyahu for “this great honor”.
